SEAN BURNS

Agrees with the Tomatometer 73% of the time.

Biography: Since 1999 Sean Burns has been Philadelphia Weekly's lead film critic, and also currently writes for The Improper Bostonian. His work has previously appeared in The Boston Metro, Matinee Magazine, The Nashville Scene, Time Out New York and The House Next Door. Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy's WBZ 1030 AM Radio Show, and in 2002 received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940s daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical 21st century navel-gazing film critic." Burns has also been told that he "smokes too much and drives like an old lady." He and his cat live in Stoneham, MA.

Up The Yangtze (2007)

" This, the film argues, is the way of the future: One form of poverty-stricken squalor replaced by a tackier, more plasticized life of similarly deadend subservience, all in the guise of economic progress."

Under the Same Moon (2008)

" This American Tail for the Lou Dobbs era probably shouldn't work as well as it does, but even we hardened film critics can get a little mushy sometimes."

United 93 (2006)

" At no point during United 93 does it feel like you're watching a movie. It feels like you're there. And, yes, this is is a truly terrible, sickening feeling. The film is as raw as an exposed nerve--which is exactly how it should be."

Underworld: Evolution (2006)

" As always, Beckinsale remains a beautiful void --one with all the right curves and not a glimmer of personality... a pretty, porcelain nothing."

Undead (2005)

" ...so amateurish and unimaginative, the big mystery is why anybody bothered to put it in theaters. It's the first horror film that's shot like a sitcom. "

" Uptight Joan Allen gets drunk and goes ballistic in this flawed, deeply satisfying picture, offering Kevin Costner a chance to re-discover his off-kilter comic timing."

" It feels something like a made-for-TV movie that fell back behind the fridge circa 1982 and has been rotting there ever since."

Undertow (2004)

" A hostile negotiation between a lyrical filmmaker and genre requirements -- predictable plot points attached like a house-arrest ankle braclet. Lovely moments, though... "
