Barry Bostwick (born February 24 1946) is an American actor and singer, particularly associated with made-for-television movies and mini-series. He was born in San Mateo, California.
Bostwick has appeared in many movies and starred on television from 1996 through 2002 playing the Mayor of New York City in the sitcom Spin City opposite Michael J. Fox and successor Charlie Sheen. However he is probably best known for playing Brad in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and as George Washington in the epic film George Washington and its sequel, The Forging of a Nation. He has also had a recurring role since early 2004 on Law and Order: SVU as defense attorney Oliver Gates.
He is also a veteran of musical theatre. In 1972, he originated the role of Danny Zuko in the original Broadway production of Grease. The role earned Bostwick a Tony Award nomination. Bostwick's other theatre roles include portraying bandit Jamie Lockhart in the 1977 Broadway musical The Robber Bridegroom. For this role, Bostwick earned his Tony Award. In 1990, another Broadway musical, Nick and Nora, in which Bostwick co-starred with Joanna Gleason, opened to poor reviews and closed after few performances.
Bostwick served as host of the nationally televised annual "Capitol Fourth" celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., until 2006. He hosted for eight years in total.
Divorced from Stacey Nelkin in 1991, Bostwick is now married to Sherry Ellen Jenkins and has two children, Brian and Chelsea. Bostwick is the son of Bud and Betty Bostwick.
