James Mangold (born December 1964) is an American film director.

He was born in New York City and is best known for the independent film Heavy, winner of the best directing prize at Sundance.

He also directed Cop Land starring Sylvester Stallone, Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta; Girl, Interrupted, which won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1999 for Angelina Jolie; and the 2003 thriller Identity which starred John Cusack.

His most recent film, Walk the Line, is about the life of singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. It stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and was released on November 18 2005. Witherspoon won Best Actress Oscar for her performance as June Carter Cash.

Mangold got his start as a graduate fresh out of the California Institute of the Arts, joining a Disney program that encouraged and fostered young filmmakers, making him one of the youngest to start out. Mangold grew disillusioned with the program and said that his deal was not renewed at the end of his first year. This led to an interest in writing as a profession. But it was a phone call with a graduate college professor in which he was advised that the publishing world is just as tough as the film industry.

Mangold decided to re-establish himself and applied to Columbia University's film school, where he graduated with an MFA in film.

During the filming and production of his 2003 film Identity (film), he got to work alongside his wife, Cathy Konrad, who put the idea of directing the film to Mangold.

Mangold also appeared in The Sweetest Thing as a doctor and love interest to Christina Applegate.
