Mary Clare was an English actress who performed both in films and on the stage.

Biography

Mary Clare was born in London on 17th July 1894.

She started on the London stage at the age of 16 in 1910. She appeared in the film The Black Spider in 1920, and thereafter divided her time between the sstage and the cinema. On films, she was mainly a character actress. In later life often portraying mature ladies, who had strength of character or were authocratic.

The sole film in which she played the leading role was Mrs Pimm of Scotland Yard in 1939. She appeared in two of the British-made Alfred Hitchcocks films (Young and Innocent and The Lady Vanishes) playing vastly different chacters. She played the same part,Linda Singer, in two different versions of The Constant Nymph, and had previously been in the Stage version. In 1956, she was in several TV ephisodes in British television.

Mary Clare died in London on 29th August 1970.
