Hecht was born on August 16, 1941 in London, England.

Hecht is a stage, film, and television actor. He was nominated in 1968 as Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play Tony Award for his appearance in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. In addition to other television projects, he has been a frequent guest star since 1992 on Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, most often playing doctors.
