Stan Winston (born April 7, 1946), is an American professional special effects and makeup artist. He has worked with James Cameron and his most notable creature works in films include the entire Terminator series, the entire Jurassic Park series, Aliens, and Predator. Winston owns more than one effects studio (including Stan Winston Digital) although his main area of expertise and his shop's is in practical effects.

Stan's son, Matt, is an actor, possibly best known for his role as Crewman Daniels on Star Trek: Enterprise.

Stan Winston Studio timeline

In 1969, after attending California State University, Long Beach, Stan Winston moved to Hollywood to pursue a career as an actor. However, it didn't look like he was going to get any good parts soon, so he began a makeup apprenticeship at Disney as a day job. Three years later Stan won an Emmy for his effects work on the telefilm Gargoyles. Having met with success in makeup artistry Stan Winston kept on with the trade, garnering a numerous other Emmy nominations between 1973 and '79 for work on such projects as The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman. Only two years later Stan achieved his first Oscar nomination for Heartbeeps by which time he had set up his own studio. Winston is known among Star Wars fans for his work in 1978 in creating the Wookiee costumes for The Star Wars Holiday Special.

It was in 1984 that Stan Winston was made famous for his effects work on James Cameron's Terminator bringing the metallic killing machine to life. Winston would reunite with Cameron on more than one occasion, winning his first Oscar for Best Visual Effects on Aliens with Cameron.

The year 1989 saw Stan try his hand at directing with the horror movie Pumpkinhead which won best first time director at the Paris Film Festival. He would next direct the child-friendly A Gnome Named Gnorm in 1990 staring Anthony Michael Hall.

Winston's prolific work as an effects artist and his studio became famous for providing world-class goods when it came to practical effects. Working on such films as Predator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park which all either got an Oscar nomination or won for Best Visual Effects, he and his team continue to push the boundaries of what can be done within the laws of physics.

In November 2006, Titan Books will publish The Winston Effect: The Art & History of Stan Winston Studio - a lavish hardback retrospective of Winston's career, including in-depth interviews and archival photography from every project in which the Studio participated. Written by Jody Duncan, the editor of Cinefex, the book is an unparallelled celebration of the master of physical effects.
