Sybille Schmitz (born December 2, 1909 - April 13, 1955) was a German actress. Sybille attended an acting school in Cologne and got her first engagement at Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater Berlin in 1927.
Only one year later she made her film debut with "Freie Fahrt" (28), which contributed her first attention by the critics. To her other early movies belong "Tagebuch einer Verlorenen" (29), "Vampire" (32) and eventually "F.P. 1 antwortet nicht" (32), where she impersonated her first leading role.
She became established as a great actress of the German cinema with her next movies and was fascinationg as a mysterious woman in movies like "Der Herr der Welt" (34), "Abschiedswalzer" (34), "Ein idealer Gatte" (35) and "Fährmann Maria" (35) - a very individual movie which lived from her performance.
She took part in the movies "Die Umwege des schönen Karl" (37), "Tanz auf dem Vulkan" (38), "Die Frau ohne Vergangenheit" (39), "Trenck, der Pandur" (40) and "Titanic" (43).
After the war demanding roles nearly stopped for her. She appeared in the movies "Zwischen gestern und morgen" (47), "Sensation im Savoy" (50) and "Illusion in Moll" (52), but her way back to the anonymity she repressed with drugs. It followed depressions and several attempted suicides, finally the committal to a psychiatric clinic. She became completely poor and committed suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills. One year later there was brought an action against her lady doctor because of improper medical treatment.
The last years of Sybille Schmitz were used as basis for Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1982 movie "Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss".
Sybille Schmitz was married with the screenwriter Harald G. Peterson. The marriage broke up when Sybille Schmitz had a love affair with the theater chief Beate von Molo.
