Thearon "Tom" Atkins of Cincinnati, Ohio, was a television news anchorman and politician of the Republican party. Atkins was an anchorman for WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, a job shared by several Cincinnati-area politicians, including Jerry Springer, Charlie Luken, and Courtis Fuller. In 1978, Atkins was hand-picked by the Hamilton County, Ohio, Republican leadership to challenge Tom Luken in his bid for re-election to the United States House of Representatives. However, Atkins lost the Republican primary to Stan Aronoff. In 1980, Atkins won the Republican nomination, but nevertheless lost to Luken in the general election.
