Based on a real trial that divided Australia in the 1950s, this searing drama from director Craig Lahiff follows an Aboriginal man (David Ngoombujarra) accused of raping and killing a white child in a trial that exposed the ugly racism of Australia's legal system. Robert Carlyle and Kerry Fox play the public defenders who take on that system when they help him appeal his brutally unjust conviction. Excellent performances and thoughtful direction helped this small but powerful film rack up praise and awards on its release in Australia, as well as on the festival circuit. [More]

Reviews for Black and White
finds just the right balance between scenes inside and outside the courtroom, and deftly juggles an unusually large number of characters without ever seeming cluttered.
Some fine performances, but the story lacks focus and spends too much time in the gray area.
