An evening at a local bar turns violent when three men push a woman onto a pool table and rape her -- as many of the bar's patrons cheer them on. When she learns that the rapists have plea-bargained their way into a lesser charge (meaning that the rape never officially occurred), the woman and her lawyer take a novel approach: they prosecute the "spectators" for encouraging the criminals. In her first Oscar role, Jodie Foster plays Sarah Tobias, a fast-food waitress who's gang-raped ina roadside table. In the course of the film, she transforms from a good-time hard-drinking girl to a woman fighting for the self-esteem she never had.

A atuação intensa e corajosa de Jodie Foster quase redime um filme que, graças à direção burocrática de Kaplan, parece ter sido realizado para a televisão.
