Even a melodrama can be made credible in the hands of a skilled director, as Leesong Hee-Il reminds us in No Regret.

Reviews for No Regret
As a love story, it could scarcely be more tempestuous and as an exposé of class differences and sexual hypocrisy it could hardly be more scathing -- or, more important, entertaining.
Part soap opera, part soft-core gay sex movie, No Regret is the debut feature by Leesong Hee-il, who is said to be South Korea's first openly gay filmmaker.
[Director] Leesong fails to extrapolate the insights of the brothel milieu into his larger agenda: a melodramatic love-hate affair between Sumin and Jaemin so schematic it's unintelligible.
The tale of class-clashing lovers plays out predictably until the final act, which appears to have been inspired by Oscar Wilde’s observations that each man kills the thing he loves and nothing succeeds like excess.
Sexy, gritty and inspired, No Regret captures a love story so true and aching and unforgettable, it crosses gender lines completely.
Invites comparisons with "Brokeback Mountain", but this $100,000 Korean film is far better in every respect. Not to be missed.
Leesong Hee-il's miserabilist l'amour fou might seem on its surface to lack either the Sirkian glow or Fassbinderesque kick to make its melodrama work--and it does, but Leesong seasons the familiar hokeyness with some flair.
