Exclusive: Franklyn - Director's Sketchbook
by Joe Utichi | February 26, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Franklyn may be Gerald McMorrow's debut feature film, but by the standards of even the most experienced of helmers it's an ambitious and visually-stunning movie, telling the tale of four disparate souls -- played by Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green, Sam Riley & Bernard Hill - who find each other on their quest to find themselves. Part set in contemporary London and part set in a mythical fantasy world called Meanwhile City -- whose inhabitants must, by law, find religious faith even if that means taking washing machine instructions as their bible -- it's one of the most original and exciting British films of the year. Exclusively on RT, McMorrow opens his sketchbook and explains his vision for the film. Back to Article

Awesome, I really wish this would come out soon! Looks so good. Joe you've seen it right? What did you think?

It's a half-assed version of Del Toro's Pan's Labryinth.

Can't say I really liked it; whereas the original idea is unique, the execution is quite dismal, especially the cinematic tricks director uses to cover the clues. On the other hand, you sense the creator behind the whole thing really has a vision and he's trying to make it work... But it doesn't.

Jokerboy: I think it's a pretty great film, and the sort of ambitious project I'm really proud to call British. Like most ambitious movies I don't think it'll work for everyone, but I think if you give it your time and an open mind it'll reward you with something you're absolutely not used to seeing from cinema, let alone British Independent cinema.

It's not even remotely a version of Pan's Labyrinth, half-assed or not.

Yeah I hope to see it soon, it kind of gave me a Dark City vibe when I saw the trailer. I'm sure it will get picked up here and will probably be realeased this year, but yeah I think it looks really good. Also Ryan Phillipe looks pretty bad @ss in it.

I saw it last night too, caught it at Croydon Grants. You'd think, considering this is a British film that features on the BBC news due to the shooting locations, it would be getting a lot of press here. It isn't.

Regardless of all that, I absolutely loved the film. Performances were all solid, especially Ryan Phillipe and I don't usually like him. It's visually stunning and very well paced. I did start to worry that I might leave the cinema frustrated and confused, as none of the plot threads seemed to relate, but when things start clicking around the halfway point the film really picks up.

Excellent score too. Let the film wash over you, makes for great post-cinema-pub discussion.
