The Hangover is funny but not deeply so. There's a difference between funny incidents piled up in a line and people who make us laugh because of who they are.

Quite entertaining as an entry in this tried-and-true genre of "guys going on a inadvertent wacky adventure," and I like how this one is set up as a kind of mystery.

The real underlying message of The Hangover, as in most of Phillips' films, is that women are shrews, whores and/or fools-though Galifinakis is the only one to deal with the homoerotic subtext within the male bonding.

The raucous, raunchy laughs are indeed plentiful and the gags often outrageous, but what really drives the film is the unpredictability of the script.
