Mike Manadoro (Kevin Zegers), a 19 year old from Brooklyn, will do almost anything to get out of his neighborhood and to study photography at a Manhattan university. The problem is Mike's father Vinny (Vincent D'Onofrio), a retired sanitation worker, does not have the financial means to support his son's dream. So when local mob boss Tony (Titus Welliver) offers Mike a high paying job, he takes it. Mike enters college at the same time as he begins delivering mysterious packages for Tony. Juggling new friendships, old loyalties, a new romance (SOPHIA BUSH) and the world of small-time crime, Mike's choices begin to result in dangerous and potentially fatal consequences for himself and everyone around him. --© Official Site [More]

Although it offers nothing fresh, new or surprising and somewhat falls apart in the messy third act, The Narrows, nonetheless, manages to be an often captivating, visually stylish drama with solid performances and sharp dialogue.

François Velle's local crime drama is so earnest, it feels unkind to tell the truth -- which is that we've seen this story, told in just this way, too many times before.

A tired and derivative plot builds up to an unconvincing series of shootings with which the movie fills its violence quota.

The Narrows is too riddled with clichés reaching past Scorsese all the way to Cagney flicks to be any more effective than a mowed-down capo.

Until it implodes with preposterous plot manipulations, The Narrows can be appreciated as the film equivalent of a reasonably palatable pasta dish concocted from a familiar recipe and served in a no-frills restaurant.

Shuffling, mumbling and musing about his loser's life, Vincent D'Onofrio stealthily steals the picture.

There's only so much mileage you can get out of the proper local pronunciation of 'nay-buh-hood.'

Imagine Mean Streets with less grit, unconvincing casting and none of Scorsese’s tortured Catholic guilt.

Serviceably enjoyable, like cold pizza but little more.
