Critical Consensus: Crown This "Kong"
by Tim Ryan | December 13, 2005

The original "King Kong" is a movie so loved, and so emulated, that it would seem a foolhardy task to try to remake it. But Peter Jackson is a director who dreams big, and realizes those dreams more often than not. Will the critics go ape for his new "Kong?"

Jackson has said the original "King Kong" was the movie that made him want to make movies. It's not hard to see why; Jackson has a sublime sense of how to balance the illusory with the emotional, as he showed in "Heavenly Creatures" and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. And few films in the medium use the fantastic (a giant ape) as the embodiment of such a wide-ranging list of themes, from unrequited love to cultural imperialism. This is a long-winded way of saying that critics love this new "Kong" because it delivers both as spectacle and as a thrilling examination of what has made the original so compelling after all these years. The scribes say the film blends stunning visuals with a storyline that has a ton of heart. At 87 percent on the Tomatometer, "Kong" is Certified Fresh. And it's the third best-reviewed wide release of the year, behind only "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" (which also features a battle atop the Empire State Building), at 95 percent, and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (89 percent).

Recent Peter Jackson Films:
--------------------------------
95% -- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
98% -- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
93% -- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
100% -- Forgotten Silver (1997)
71% -- The Frighteners (1996)

from horrible to great
Its amazing to me that the same director that made the horrible movies Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles could make the amazing and epic Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I am really looking forward to Kong. I also appreciate Jacksons casting of films: Jack Black and Naomi Watts look perfect for their roles in the trailer.

I just got my Kong tickets for tomorrow night and I can't wait. I hope it is as good as they say. It would also be nice to see Spidey knocked out of the best opening ever slot, but with it being 3 hours, I don't know.

I have high hopes
every film class I've taken, every teacher has made it clear how inspirational and how technically advanced Kong was for its time, I mean Kong is literally the first special effects movie ever made. Jackson knows his craft and I cant wait to see it.

Has Peter Jackson Sold his soul the devil or something? If he keeps making classics like The Rings Trillogy and King Kong, i think we will know the answer to that. King Kong very well might be my favorite movie of the year and i encourage all to see it.

Jackson, Jackson.
His run of incredible films will continue. Don't expect Jackson to stop with Kong. His ideas inside his head(he obviously has many) have had many, many years to form and to shift into place.

And Jackson, do me a favor. Direct the next Anacondas movie, will you? It devastates me that they made the first two so bad. You specialize in things like this. Snakes devouring people and then regurgitating their bodies is right up your alley.

I'm not jesting, my Lord.

Great... but...
Normally when a movie gets a ton of great reviews and a few rotten ones, the rotten ones seem childish and poorly thought out. Sadly I have to agree with them on Kong - it IS too long. I don't mind a 3 hour movie (and I relished in the detail during the first half of the film) but some scenes are unnecessary (how many dinosaur chases do we REALLY need?) and virtually all of them are longer than they need to be. I felt the final sequence on the ESB was much longer than it should have been, which left me leaving the theater saying "man that was long". But man, was that a damn fine film. Jack Black and Naomi Watts are perfectly cast, and the movie is a masterpiece. But Peter Jackson definitely needs an editor!
