Arguably one of Joan Crawford's best pictures, the film was a well-crafted vehicle for the star who portrayed an emotionally and physically scarred woman whose life drastically changes after undergoing plastic surgery. A remake of a 1938 Swedish film starring Ingrid Bergman, George Cukor's version is an atypical film noir, possessing a healthy dose of gloss and glamour, expertly handled suspense elements, and superb performances. The film is framed by a trial and is told in a sequence of masterful flashbacks. Anna (Joan Crawford), disfigured as a child, is a hardened woman who joins a blackmail ring, meeting and falling in love with Torsten (Conrad Veidt), an evil man waiting for a substantial inheritance who would like to rid himself of competition, namely his nephew. Anna begins to doubt her allegiance to Torsten when a series of events improves her own life. [More]

Reviews for A Woman's Face
Under Cukor's expert guidance, Crawford gives one of her least mannered performance in this film noir remake of an Ingrid Bergman Swedish film of a woman whose scarred face has made her bitter; disregard the preposterous plot and enjoy the production
