Told in a series of flashbacks, ROMANCE stars Gavin Gordon as aging bishop Thomas Armstrong, who remembers his passionate and ill-fated romance with the luminous diva Madame Rita Cavallini (Greta Garbo) when his young grandson admits his desire for a young actress. Thomas, a well-born bishop-to-be, is instantly smitten with the luminous diva (Greta Garbo) when she appears at his uncle's mansion for a ball. Ignoring the whispers of her scandalous reputation, Armstrong enters into an idyllic romance with the opera singer--despite his family's disapproval. Their plans for marriage are shaken, however, when Armstrong discovers that his uncle (Lewis Stone) is Cavallini's ex-lover. Based on the play SIGNORA CACILINI by Edward Sheldon, this sentimental romance features a glamourous performance from the great Greta Garbo as the passionate diva. [More]
