Robinson) transforms a young, soft-spoken bellhop (Wayne Morris) with a talent for prizefighting into Kid Galahad, a title contender. Donati's girlfriend, Fluff (Bette Davis), and his sister, Marie (Jane Bryan), both fall in love with the clean-cut boxer, adding layers of drama to the climactic grudge match between the Kid and a fighter promoted by Donati's bitter rival, Turkey Morgan (Humphrey Bogart). The contentious interplay between Bogart--delightfully plausible as the shady promoter notorious for his heavy-handed gangster tactics--and fellow screen legend Robinson electrifies the action in what is considered one of the greatest pictures about the fight game ever made. Davis, heating up the screen in her supporting roll, pulls off a rare turn as chanteuse when she sings a solo in a nightclub sequence. The film was remade in 1941 as THE WAGONS ROLL AT NIGHT and in a 1962 version starring Elvis Presley. [More]
