The country is in the midst of the Great Depression, and Elly Dinsmore has been having trouble maintaining her Georgia farm and rearing her two kids ever since the recent death of her husband. Desperate for help, and with another child on the way, she puts a classified ad in a newspaper for a new spouse. The man who shows up at her door is Will Parker, just released from prison for murdering a prostitute. In spite of her initial reluctance, Elly decides to take him in and the two soon become romantically involved.
