Early Consensus: "Batman Begins" Seizes the Crown
by RT Staff | June 13, 2005
Discuss Article
There have been a number of attempts to bring the Dark Knight to the big screen. They have varied from the brooding to the campy, with varying degrees of success. With "Memento" director Christopher Nolan at the helm, it appears someone's finally cracked the code that has eluded so many others.

Critics say "Batman Begins" is brooding and dark, yes, but also exciting and smart, a film that understands the essence of one of the definitive superheroes. At 85 percent on the Tomatometer, this is the best reviewed live action Batman film of them all trumping even Tim Burton's ballyhooed 1989 effort. Burton's Batman films "Batman" and "Batman Returns" were heavily influenced by film noir darkness and "Metropolis" set design; Joel Schumacher's follow-ups, "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin," were lighter and more action-heavy. But critics say this is the movie that does the best job of focusing on the Bruce Wayne/Batman dichotomy, and Christian Bale gets terrific support from a stellar cast that includes Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Tom Wilkinson, Morgan Freeman, Ken Watanabe, and Katie Holmes.

Batman Films and Their Tomatometer:
11% - Batman & Robin
50% - Batman Forever
79% - Batman Returns
79% - Batman

oh man!
I went out and bought tickets today for the 15th! I've been waiting for this movie for 8 months... i'm so excited! I think i might have a problem. Batman has been my favorite comic book since i was like 8 and to think that somone finally got it right... I thought that Burton's Batman movies were fantastic - dark, angry, just what you'd want. And to think that this one is supposed to be better. Oh man, i'm getting to the theater early to get a good seat!

Yes, you *are* gonna get *The* Batman Movie! I just came from a Monday Night Sneak and well, let's say that if the only complaints that I can strain out of this movie are that the fight scenes are filmed too close for my taste then this is one heckuva show. It starts with young bruce falling down a shaft to face his first fear (of bats), then proceeds from there on. Although this time around at this point you are shown just how much of a respectable and loved set of parents Bruce had. They are "fleshed-out" and show a lot more than the ineviatable "murder scene" by - not "The Joker" as Burton had shown - but a common street criminal. This sets up Bruce second fear.
Now then, without giving too much away - this version feels like they studied not only the previous movies, but the comic books, the tv show, and both animated series. No question you'll like it.

Isn't this premature?
I want the movie to do well and get good reviews, but I won't be surprised if there's a backlash. As of this writing, only 35 reviews are in. Let's see how it holds up after we pass 100 reviews. I do think reviews written by people who don't understand the movie should be removed.

so, who gets to decide if a reviewer 'understood' the movie?

just curious.

i've been relatively ambivalent about this, but the positive buzz is intriguing. 'course, i was also fairly interested in seeing war of the worlds until cruise went nutso...

Well for one thing there are like 24 user reviews and most of them 10's the film isn't even out yet!! These people are just crazy Batman fans rating a film before they have even seen it, they should be removed, or RT should set it so you can't review a film till it is actually released. And don't say they saw the sneak preview I guarantee you out of the 24 user reviews maybe 1 or 2 have actually seen the film before it has come out, everyone else is just blowing crap out their rear end!

It is Great
I saw the midnight screening of Batman Begins and it blew me away. it has minimal flaws with the close combat, but the entire movie was intense and intriguing. It was so good, I saw it again the next night and I might see it again in a week since there is no other good movie coming out until The War of the Worlds at the end of the month.

This movie is great! OMG. They finally got Batman right, without making him look cheesy and stupid. The acting was great, the dialogue was great, the action was great, everything was great.

And with the Joker probably being in the second one, this new series (if they keep all the actors) will be the new hotness.

Opposite of the Hulk
Whoever said this will be like the Hulk of the season will be eating their words when they see this movie. Whereas the Hulk had an infamously high dropoff rate in tickets sold after the opening, Batman Begins could very well have one of the lowest dropoff rates in recent history. My reasoning is that I don't think it will have a huge opening due to very low expectations, and positive word of mouth will generate more ticket sales in later weeks than most movies get in the same timeframe. However the Wednesday release may help with weekend ticket sales too. I had no hopes for this movie, now I can say it was AMAZING. GO SEE IT NOW.
