After being forced to kill his lover, he is placed in a prison camp, where he lies so he will be classified as Jewish rather than homosexual. The screen version of Sherman's noted play about homosexuals in Nazi Germany shows that tyro director Sean Mathias doesn't know much about film for his erratic approach and inconsistent style bring out the play's weaknesses rather than strengths.
