Set in Indochina, the story centers around British journalist Thomas Fowler (Michael Redgrave) and a character known only as "The American" (Audie Murphy). As the country is gripped ever-tighter by the Communist uprising, the coupling find themselves in a battle over both their personal beliefs, and a woman whom they both desire and whose views they wish to mould into their own. Suspicion and intrigue ensue, with the two men doubting each others motives, and Mankiewicz allowing the film to burn slowly towards a surprising conclusion. [More]

Reviews for The Quiet American
One of Mankiewicz's weaker films, a verbose, disappointingly sanitized version of Graham Greene's cynical novel about American involvement in Indo-China, with mediocre turns by Murphy and Redgrave.
The Quiet American is loosely adapted from Graham Greene's penetrating 1956 book about the Indo-China War.
