Dana Andrews stars as a drifter named Eric Stanton, who, after landing in a small California town, falls in love with Stella (Linda Darnell), a diner waitress. She makes it clear that she'll have nothing to do with Eric unless he has some money, so he hatches a plan to marry June Mills (Alice Faye), a wealthy reclusive spinster who is in love with him. Unfortunately, right after the wedding, Stella turns up dead, and the blame is placed on Eric. [More]

Reviews for Fallen Angel
The overall mood, lighting, and pace of the film, nevertheless, are top, hardboiled film noir.
The portrait of small-town loneliness and desperation is well and sharply drawn.
Heck, you almost expect Mildred Pierce to show up at Pop's Diner to sell him some pies!
For all of its acting wealth, Fallen Angel falls short of being a top flight whodunit.
Its subtle analysis of shadowy tropes proves both a continuation and a deepening of Preminger's use of moral ambiguity as a tool of human insight.
It lacks that desperation, doom, and paranoia. It's limp; it's just going through the motions.
Worth watching for its fascinating view of the seamy underbelly of parochial life in post-war America.
