There are a lot of laughs to be mined from the spectacle of ego-inflated superstars tripping over each other trying to grab a $65 gold statue, but you won't find them here.

Consensus: As the object of satire gets bigger the jokes become thinner, and Christopher Guest isn’t as droll or insightful here than when he was lampooning smaller subjects.

The plot follows the cast and crew of a fictional movie called HOME FOR PURIM, which is directed by Jay Berman (played by Guest himself) and stars an aging actress at the end of her career, Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara); an actor best known for starring in a hotdog ad, Victor Allen Miller (Harry Shearer); and young Callie Webb (Parker Posey), who is trying to put her VAGINA MONOLOGUES-esque past (in a production called NO PENIS INTENDED) firmly behind her. As Berman and Co. attempt to bring HOME FOR PURIM to the screen, a variety of supporting players flits in and out of the movie, with Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Coolidge appearing as two very different producers, Jane Lynch and Fred Willard playing the glitzy hosts of trashy celebrity-obsessed TV show HOLLYWOOD NOW, and Bob Balaban appearing as a frustrated co-writer. This motley bunch all get along just fine until an Oscar buzz surrounds certain cast members, leading to a fierce explosion of wildly different ideas and ambitions for the film. Fans of Guest's movies will doubtless experience a welcome familiarity in the feel of FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. The usual deadpan wit, carefully crafted satire, and close attention to detail in everything from Fred Willard's haircut to the computer graphics of HOLLYWOOD NOW are all lovingly rendered, and Guest's loyal troupe of performers--as well as a sprinkling of new faces--delivers the material with habitual ease. In an era when most Hollywood comedy sticks to a strict, well-trodden formula, it's satisfying to find someone like Guest plowing a lonely furrow against the grain, and there's enough spark in FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION to suggest he still has plenty of wit yet to bestow on his faithful audience. Reviews for For Your Consideration
Not only are the characters morons, but thier work is mediocre. In earlier films, their work was actually good.
By the end, For Your Consideration feels like a missed opportunity through and through.
While For Your Consideration has many of the same elements that have worked so well for [Guest] in the past, they don't quite come together this time.
While that title raises expectations for delicious humor, what we see of the movie itself is foolish and flat.
Levy and Guest train a glaring spotlight on the self-absorption, vanity, delusions and histrionics of the movie community, but clearly love them even at their silliest.
Much of For Your Consideration feels shrill and off-base, like it's working too hard and reaching too far.
For Your Consideration becomes more effective as it gets more cutting.
... still far funnier than most of what passes for movie comedy these days ...
Fred Willard, as always, just exudes funny as the co-host of 'Entertainment Now,' and Jane Lynch's forced postures as his partner are hilariously spot-on.
You would expect heady fun from Guest and company as they parody themselves, but the movie is considerably weaker than past efforts.
... Christopher Guest's aim in For Your Consideration is hilariously accurate.
For Your Consideration is not the best film put out by the Christopher Guest rep company. But it might be the funniest.
As those of us who actually follow these entertainment industry sagas head into the real life awards season, it's a pleasure to have For Your Consideration arrive just now to remind us what nonsense it all is.
Despite the dead fish floating in this latest barrel, the potshots in For Your Consideration do add up to a knowing jeremiad against the maddening phenomenon of awards-season hype.
Hollywood is Guest's ***** here, and it's an easy target, but neither he nor his usual gang go for the easy laughs... at least not all the time.
...a more poignant and subtle point of view than what director Christopher Guest and his improvisational entourage have served up in their past efforts.
