Taken for a recreational outing by their well-meaning therapist, they're soon embroiled in kidnapping, violence, and political corruption. The script's comic situations cleverly exploit the specific mental imbalance of each of the four patients: obsessive-compulsive disorder, persistent delusion, selective mutism, and uncontrollable rage. Many of the episodes are laugh-out-loud funny, yet the emotional quotient is often surprisingly high, generating some heartbreaking pathos capable of provoking a tear or two. In addition, the "insane" hilarity is balanced with sobering threats of violence. This dexterous alternation keeps the plot fluid. Following in the footsteps of the American film THE DREAM TEAM, KRAZZY 4 is richer in philosophy than one might suppose. The age-old human conundrum of a "holy fool" remains a potent archetype: can it be that one must be "mad" to fully appreciate the hypocrisy and injustice that surround us in our "civilized" society? The naïve and forthright expression of the disturbed can sometimes shame the sanctimonious majority. In true Bollywood fashion, several songs surface throughout and are varied, tuneful, and exciting. All the numbers that feature dancing are expertly choreographed and visually dynamic. Melodic lyricism, traditional Indian music, and hip-hop all play a part in Roshan's assured score. In one scene, his use of a theme from ZORBA THE GREEK is an inspired choice, allusively expressing "intoxication" with life. Two genuine mega-stars' cameo appearances provide some outstanding moments, and anyone who appreciates great dancing should watch through the end credits. KRAZZY 4's light-hearted look at lunacy, convincing cast, and satisfying dramatic trajectory ensure enjoyment. [More]
