Box Office Guru Preview: Zac Back Again in 17 Again
Summary
Teen prince Zac Efron aims to score his second number one opener in six months, but this time without the help of an established franchise, with the new comedy 17 Again. Boldly entering racy PG-13 territory, the Disney-bred superstar plays a thirtysomething man who is transformed into the body of a teenager. Matthew Perry plays the bigger version of the character. The New Line film is being released by Warner Bros. which will target teens and young adults but is also hoping to court the younger tween fans of the young actor despite the rating. 17 Again is essentially for Efron what Mean Girls was for Lindsay Lohan five years ago - a more mature PG-13 vehicle for a Mouse House star trying to branch out into older storylines without abandoning the young base. Trufire writes: on Apr 16 2009 05:25 PM I don't see Crank 2 beating out State of Play. I really don't. My guess, Crank at 8-9 mil while SoP about 13-14 mil. 17 again in my mind will easily take the number 1 spot by a gap of 3 to 4 mil. IMO of course :) (Reply to this) |

Duckett H. writes: on Apr 16 2009 08:13 PM I believe that 17 Again will make significantly more than predicted. I hope that Crank 2: High Voltage performs well. Of the new films, State of Play is the one that I am most likely to see, but the ad campaign has no clear plot and I see the film doing poorly. (Reply to this) |

earthbound writes: on Apr 16 2009 10:56 PM Crank 2 looks more interesting than anything else opening this weekend. It may perform better than projected. Yes, it looks awful, but in a cheesy so-bad-you-have-to-see-it way. It is the kind of movie that could make a lot of money, but no one will admit to having gone out to see it. State of Play doesn't look nearly as interesting as Body of Lies did and Lies tanked. Affleck has been a joke for several years now, so I could see this one fizzling. Speaking of fizzling, the Tomato Meter has been steadily sinking on 17 Again all week. Still it will do the big business this weekend. Personally, I don't see Efron's appeal. He seems way too effeminate for a male romantic lead, but maybe that is just me. The big loser this week should be Hannah Montana. It will be lucky to make 12 million and I could see it failing to hit 10 mil. HSM dropped 63% (with Halloween on its second Friday). At that pace it wouldn't hit 12 million. While HSM had to deal with a Friday Halloween, Hannah finished in third place behind Monsters vs Aliens in its first week. And HSM had no direct competition, while Ms. Montana does. (Reply to this) |

SuckitBaby writes: on Apr 17 2009 12:16 AM Unfortunately, the weekend will end up just like this... 1. 17 Again...30 million 2. Monsters vs. Aliens...14 million 3. Fast & Furious...12 million 4. State of Play...10 million 5. Crank 2...8 million I have spoken! This is what will be! P.S. Statham, be a little more picky when it comes to the scripts man!! It's gonna take alot to forget that you were once in a Uwe Boll movie! (Reply to this) |

Tom C. writes: on Apr 18 2009 02:01 AM Well 17 again will beat expectations for sure. Those girls and boys who went to see Hannah Montana will definitely go to see Zac Efron this weekend. We are looking at $24M more or less.Crank2 will finish in second with $14-$16M.Why so high, because when Crank opened in 2006 very few people desired to see it on big screen, but now when Zac Efron is opening big trash movie fans will go to see it..... Hannah Montana will fall big but third place is not impossible $12...State of Play is running for Top 3 but it might be too short for this well predictable big stars holding movie..I'll say $10M is the top number.Somewhere in the middle there will be Monsters vs. Aliens. Around $10-$13 will do, and $200M dream isn't impossible. And the Last movie who could beat $10M this weekend is Fast&Furious, it could beat expected $12M but ill say $10M is more possible.
