Amiable and proficient, this indie romantic comedy is never more or less than reliable.

The leads have no chemistry; the supporting cast of carnies and eccentrics is bland; the staging is dull; not a single gag lands; and Justin and Galaxy's one get-to-know-you conversation is never heard because it's buried in a road trip music montage.

Amusing, lively and imaginative with terrific, crisp cinematography, but it's often too cartoonish, convoluted, juvenile and low on laughs.

Splinterheads might suffice some late night on cable, but that's about it.

Attempts to compensate for its too-familiar romantic setup by defining its characters through idiosyncratic hobbies and traits.

Splinterheads, which aims to be a quirkier Adventureland, never rises above mildly amusing.

For a better courtship story set amongst the world of cotton candy and Tilt-a-Whirls, rent Adventureland instead.

It's another tale of an overgrown kid accepted for his sweet, stammering self and nurtured out of his cocoon.

Boasts loads of playful characters, kooky conversations and gorgeous visuals in the suburban wilds to spare. Not to mention the reputed oldest man in the world, Frankie Faison as unlikely boy toy, and a crazed cop with the pathological hots for Mom.

Despite positioning itself as a Napoleon Dynamite-style comedy about a spazzy social retard, Splinterheads seems to have misplaced most of its jokes.
