A sporadically entertaining portrayal of male humiliation and self-abnegation.

Synopsis: When scraggly, endearingly hapless filmmaker Chris Waitt gets dumped by his girlfriend--the last in a long line of disastrous affairs--he resolves to find out what exactly is wrong with him. Why... When scraggly, endearingly hapless filmmaker Chris Waitt gets dumped by his girlfriend--the last in a long line of disastrous affairs--he resolves to find out what exactly is wrong with him. Why have all his relationships ended in acrimony or indifference? What will it take for him to dodge everlasting loneliness? The only way to find out is to ask his past paramours point blank. And so begins an odyssey of inadequacy as our clueless crusader confronts exes who turn out to be mostly incredulous, crushed, or cross as they skewer him with remembrances of his chronic lateness, self-absorption, and delusion. Not even his mother can muster much sympathy! Meanwhile, Waitt attempts to jump-start his love life through Internet dating. But lo and behold, a different kind of inadequacy emerges--the kind that no amount of therapy, acupuncture, or even a session with a dominatrix can fix. Suffice it to say that nothing short of a Viagra overdose does the trick, sending Waitt careening to a desperately uncomfortable climax...I mean, catharsis. Of course, watching Waitt get his comeuppance is a deliciously gratifying romp for every woman who’s ever been wronged by a useless boyfriend. But A Complete History of My Sexual Failures is more than just sweet revenge or hilarious farce; at its core are soft, gooey truths about the sacrifices and self-knowledge required for grown-up love. --© Sundance Film Festival [More]
Reviews for A Complete History of My Sexual Failures
It’s to Waitt's credit that there are genuine moments of poignancy in the film as well as laughs and sheer astonishment.
There's an occasional brief, fierce laugh born out of the absurdity of the situations. At other points, the women provide genuine insight into relationships. Thank god for their realism and sanity. Still, this feels like a short bloated into a feature.
It's not as funny as the title suggests, but there's something endearing about this rough video diary in which filmmaker Chris Waitt takes a fly-on-the-wall approach to his past failures as a boyfriend.
It's very funny. It's slightly pathetic. It's comforting in a hey-nobody's-human kind of way.
It's a display of gross bad faith both as documentarist and lover, and its subject probably deserves never to get laid again.
Maybe, several years post-YouTube, it's just not enough anymore to train a camera on life; maybe the market demands that life be lived with the camera in mind.
Sexual Failures is edited well, the score is great and while certain scenes feel a bit staged, Waitt is immediately likable and a ball to watch on the big screen.
