"Alien vs. Predator" Sequel Promises to Be "Hardcore"
by Scott Weinberg | October 02, 2006
Discuss Article
One of the biggest complaints regarding "Alien vs. Predator" (among many) was that it was, well, kinda wimpy -- especially considering the high-end carnage we were treated to in "Alien," "Aliens," "Predator," and "Predator 2" -- but the sequel-makers seem hell-bent on amping up the nastiness for their follow-up. And that's pretty good news, I suppose.

From IESB.net and IGN FilmForce: "The formula to the Alien-Predator crossover sequel is simple: more guts, more gore, more violence. The producers appear to be narrowing their audience focus as they hope to make "Alien vs. Predator 2" a profitable venture.

"I think the approach this time is going to be very hardcore," an enthusiastic Tom Rothman, chairman of 20th Century Fox, told the IESB.net website. "Very R rated. We believe that, this pass on AVP with these filmmakers [the Strause brothers] is going to be a lot closer to the hardcore experience."

I kind of liked AVP, please don't crucify me. But I was annoyed the gore was removed, what the hell was the chestburster? It was so lame it was unreal. I didn't mind not having guts flying out and blood bursting everywhere. But a few ripped limbs, or chestbursters (with blood!) would have been a lot better. Still will definately be there for AVP2. :)

yeah I didnt mind AVP, I know it wasnt great but I saw it and thought it was neat to see them battle it out, but AVP looks to be pretty cool!

NIIIIIIICE..... i agree tho, i didn't totaly hate the first AVP. for me the only saving grace was the fact that it WAS AVP at all. But no gore, minimal violence, and no real carnage that i loved about the franchises it combined kinda prevented me from being completely happy with it. Another thing they left out were the POV of both the Alien and Predator... The disorienting Alien fish-eye view, and the thermal predator point of view. Its not that i have to have guts and violence to enjoy a movie, its just that those two factors were major attributes of the original series.

Sweet!! AVP was ok. It could have definitely used a lot more gore and a lot less Predator running in slow-mo with his helmet off.

KEEP THE HUMANS TO A MINUMUM THIS TIME!! OR INSTEAD OF KILLING ALL THE PREDATORS RIGHT AT THE START, KILL THE HUMANS RIGHT AT THE START!

I enjoyed AVP, but now they should turn AVP 2 over to Mel Gibson and let him do a version on an entirely different planet and leave the humans out of it all together. No English language or subtitles needed. Why does every bloody sci fi movie need to have humans or humanoids in it in the first place? Imagine how cool would it be to finally see just one kick ass sci fi movie without humans.

More nastiness is good...REALLY GOOD! And I think humans should be apart of the story until the climax; then they should all get out! The one thing I hated about AVP (and Freddy Vs. Jason, while we're at it) is that the humans always assisted in the "final cut"; Lori killed Freddy in FvJ, and since the humans sided with the Predators in AVP, the humans ended up helping the Predators win and the Predators ended up becoming protagonists.

I think there should just be a neutral(sp.) battle between Aliens and Predators; no ephasise on which is more of a good guy and which is more of a bad guy, no human assistance on either side, just nothing of the sort. I want either the Predators or Aliens to have the "final cut" in this one.

P.S. And if it's possible, make this the last AVP movie, and have it tie into the first Alien movie (like an explanation for the alien spaceship they find).

was it really the lack a violence that made AvP so bad???

I thought it was the terrible human plot they through in to guide the film when it should've just been ALIENS VS PREDATOR!!!!!

True... For this new one I could see them going in the opposite direction; much much gore but still a shitty story and crappy acting at heart.

This franchise has such potential; hopefully it will be good.

Yeah, I don't think gore or humans were the problem with AVP. It was a terrible script with terrible dialogue and terrible acting. But I'll at least take a look at a rated-R sequel.

I like how people throw a hissy when filmmakers talk about aiming for a PG-13 rating, but then cheer praises for these guys when they state they are shooting for an R rating. As if an R rating would have saved the frist AVP, or will make the next one anymore watchable.

Filmmakers just shoot their damn movies, and then worry about what rating the corrupt, painfully inconsistent, and functionally retarded MPAA is going to do.

Thank God, the first one was ruined because of the PG-13 rating.

Nobody gives a sh*t about plot, story, dialogue in these movies, its all about action, violence, gore, etc...and if it doesn't live up to those standards, then it fails.

I'm sure the sequel will suck as well, but it will be more entertaining with the R-rated violence.

Back to the basics
That they are aiming for an R is good but it seems either they overdo the R rated movies now a days or they don't do enough. They need to go back to what made these movies good.

Claustrophobic scares from Alien and blood thirsty kills of the hunt from Predator. Also, what is with the Predators looking like they ate one to many Big Macs? Get back to the original Predator look who could kick Arnolds ass. Forget the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle portly look.

Add to that some humans to kill and you are on the right track.

Damn it, make this one a scary movie! Forget all the BS. I know I am just dreaming.
