Pakula created a film that takes its place among such important conspiracy dramas as THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. The focus is on the 1972 investigation of the break-in to the Democratic Party headquarters, otherwise known as the Watergate burglary. Through a complicated web of intrigue and secrecy that eventually involves the highest levels of government, hungry young journalists Woodward (Robert Redford) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) of the Washington Post aggressively examine the incident, uncovering information that ultimately leads to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Exceptional performances by Redford and Hoffman are complemented by Jason Robards as the dubious but supportive executive editor at the Post, and Hal Holbrook's celebrated characterization of mysterious informer Deep Throat. The pacing of the film is quick and exciting, drawing viewers into the action of one of the most intriguing mysteries in all of American political history. [More]

Features a host of fine character portrayals and a compelling climax that compensates for its length.

A classic. More important now than it was 20 years ago.

Classic collaboration of Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, and Richard Nixon, in the most scandalous political tale of our time.

An intelligent and gripping adaptation of a sadly familiar story.

Alan Pakula's chronicle of the Washington Post Vs. the Watergate scandal is not only a poignant statement about the role of the press in the 1970s, but one of the most successful political movies in American history, both artistically and commercially.

Remarkably intelligent, working both as an effective thriller (even though we know the outcome of their investigations) and as a virtually abstract charting of the dark corridors of corruption and power.

Because we haven't been told what to think, the film remains urgently relevant today.

...an exciting and tension-filled film...a feat made all the more remarkable for our knowing virtually everything that's going to happen in the story line.

As a film, it's brilliantly crafted and constantly entertaining -- and now a fascinating time capsule of what reporting was like 30 years ago.
