an epic two-hander that seems all the more ambitious in scope for its near Aristotelian unity of time, space and action.

Ryuhei Kitamura (creator of VERSUS and ALIVE) was one such director, and ARAGAMI was the result. A philosophical meditation on life, honor, and survival ARAGAMI borrows from the Japanese legend of Musashi Miyamoto to tell the story of a wounded samurai who takes refuge in a Buddhist temple. While recuperating, he meets Aragami, a master swordsman who later reveals himself to be a flesh eating demon. Aragami challenges the samurai to fight him to the death. In the last few hours before the duel, the two opposing swordsmen share several rounds of drinks and form a unique kind of friendship. Their captivating reflections of life eventually lead up to remarkably beautiful dueling sequences, one of Kitamura's proven strengths. [More]
