Johnson Whittaker, a talented black... This politically charged historical melodrama recounts the beginnings of racial integration in America's most prestigious military academy. West Point, 1880. Johnson Whittaker, a talented black cadet, was viciously attacked by three disguised fellow students. Though he knew the perpetrators were racists who resented his presence at school, administrators chose not to believe that allegation. Instead, they added insult to injury by court-martialing Whittaker for "staging his own attack" -- supposedly, to avoid a philosophy exam. At the trial, the young man's two attorneys -- one a white bigot, the other a black Ivy League graduate -- struggled over how to formulate the defense.
