Consensus: "Atlantis" provides a fast-paced spectacle, but stints on such things as character development and a coherent plot.

Synopsis: An inexperienced young adventurer becomes the key to unraveling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a group of daredevil explorers to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis. At the center... An inexperienced young adventurer becomes the key to unraveling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a group of daredevil explorers to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis. At the center of Disney's new animated feature is naïve-but-determined museum cartographer Milo Thatch (voice of MICHAEL J. FOX), who dreams of completing the quest begun by his late Grandfather, a famous explorer. When a long lost journal surfaces, providing new clues to the location, and an eccentric billionaire agrees to fund an expedition, the action shifts into high gear. Milo ultimately leads Captain Rourke (voice of JAMES GARNER) and his team to the elusive undersea kingdom, but what they find there defies their expectations and triggers an explosive series of events that only Milo can resolve. With its bold, graphic visual interpretation and awe-inspiring wide-screen animation, "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" is directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, the team responsible for "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Veteran Disney producer Don Hahn ("The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" guided the production. James Newton Howard composed the film's epic score. -- © 2000 Disney Pictures [More]

When compared to Disney's best animated films, "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" doesn't compare.

After seeing spectacular epics like Tarzan, it is difficult to properly appreciate the mediocre, but entertaining Atlantis.

The potency of the Disney brand name will be tested with Atlantis, a peculiar animated feature that has no children in its story, no cute creatures, and no musical or dance numbers. Any reason for the family to go?

... breathtaking animation in service of a story that doesn't hold enough water to drown a rat much less a civilization.
