American Theaters Getting Shorter Cut of Babylon A.D.
U.S. to retaliate by creating shorter "European cut" of Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Oh, those greedy Europeans. It isn't enough that they have universal healthcare and the Alps -- now they're getting longer cuts of our movies, too. Will they stop at nothing?
Twitch reports (via the production's MySpace blog) that Babylon A.D. -- the Mathieu Kassovitz-directed adaptation of Maurice Georges Dantec's Babylon Babies novel that debuts on American screens February 29 -- will be released in two versions. Look, it's all right here:
There will be two versions of the movie : A shorter version for the US cinemas and a longer director's cut for the European moviegoers!
According to Twitch's source, the European cut will be two hours and forty minutes long -- giving Europeans that much more of Michelle Yeoh as a nun, not to mention precious extra minutes of the long-awaited acting summit between Vin Diesel and Gerard Depardieu. The world is grossly unfair.

Hamboner writes: on Nov 08 2007 10:11 AM Perhaps Europeans don't care about extended edition DVDs the way we Americans do, and it therefore is not as financially justifiable to develop this film as two seperate products. In America, I am sure they are planning the theatrical relase as a DVD set and also an extened edition/Director's Cut. It makes money when they do that here (think X-Men 1.5 and LoTR) and they're probably looking to create demand for the DC earlier than usual (hence there are articles and reports on it). To me it is all a mute point because this film doesn't seem very promising. I haven't liked Vin Diesel in anything but Saving Private Ryan and Pitch Black (Reply to this) |

highdough writes: on Nov 08 2007 10:28 AM Apparently Canada isn't getting a version at all! Strange. We've got universal healthcare, we should get the longer cut. Seriously though, Canadians always seem to get screwed and get the US cut even though our Canadians aren't nearly as prudish as American audiences supposedly are. (Reply to this) |

Unfortunately (which I'm sure HD would agree) we ain't Europe (can we say extended vacations) and we ain't Canada. (Reply to this) |

OldeThom writes: on Aug 06 2008 12:28 PM The true villian behind this is not Hollywood, Europe (or the rest of the world), the industry, or politics, it is a US public that has allowed itself to be duped into thinking they should not sit long enough to watch a film as it was intended (but sit through the commercials by all means.) The whole idea behind this is get to them in quick, out quick and on to the next thing, whatever it is. Consume, dispose, consume, dispose, ... like lab rats moving from one piece of cheese to the next in a not so elaborate maze. Collectively the US public (me included) is just one big commercial experiment and the majority don't care. So, we wait for the DVD director's cut ... (Reply to this) |

(Don't hate on me, this comment was a joke, its hard to lace the comment with sarcasm with just text) (Reply to this) |
