This week at the movies, we've got post-apocalyptic transport (Babylon
A.D., starring
Vin Diesel and
Michelle Yeoh), international intrigue (Traitor,
starring Don Cheadle and
Guy Pearce), a high school musical (Hamlet 2,
starring Steve Coogan and
Catherine Keener), a disaster spoof (Disaster
Movie, starring
Kim Kardasian and
Carmen Electra), and fraternity hi-jinks
(College, starring
Drake Bell). What do the critics have to say?
You can guess that a movie may not be worth your money when its director is
trashing it, and that's the case with the post-apocalyptic thriller
Babylon
A.D. Helmer Mathieu Kassovitz has gone on record as saying this Vin Diesel-starrer
isn't very good, and the critics are inclined to agree with him. Diesel plays a
mercenary who's tasked with transporting a valuable package from Eastern Europe
to New York and immediately gets more than he bargained for. The pundits say Babylon
A.D. has moments of visual invention that are resoundingly negated by an
indecipherable storyline, so-so action scenes, and shopworn tropes from other
dystopian sci-fi flicks. At five percent on the Tomatometer, Babylon A.D.
is shaping up to be one of the year's worst-reviewed films.
"Put this up your nose and get your heiny to Mars."
Don Cheadle is one of contemporary cinema's most dynamic performers, and he's been able to inject a healthy dose of thoughtful politics into his roles without compromising any dramatic thrust. However, critics say Traitor is caught between those two impulses, and as a result, doesn't fully cohere. Cheadle stars as a former Special Ops officer who's suspected by an FBI agent (Guy Pearce) of being involved with terrorist groups; a high-stakes game of international cat-and-mouse-ensues. The scribes say Traitor is smarter than your average spy thriller/action flick, with an intriguing take on the post-9/11 political landscape. But many also feel the film doesn't explore its themes deeply enough, and it features a plot that's more twisty than suspenseful. At 54 percent on the Tomatometer, this Traitor tries to play both sides, but comes up short.
"I'll tell you one more time: Umbrellas are your friends."
Steve Coogan is a sly devil; alternately calculating and ingratiating, he's a comic actor of rare craftiness. And critics say he's the best thing about Hamlet 2, an uneven but often hilarious musical comedy. Coogan stars as a failed thespian turned high school drama teacher whose personal and professional life is in disarray -- until he decides to mount a controversial musical sequel to Hamlet that includes both time travel and Jesus. The pundits say Hamlet 2 doesn't often make the most of its admittedly great premise, and its satirical aspirations often miss the mark, but Coogan's fearless, guileless performance helps sell it -- he's unafraid to make a fool of himself, and his energy is infectious. At 61 percent on the Tomatometer, Hamlet 2 is more to be than not to be. (Check out our countdown of the best Shakespeare adaptations, as well as "The Play's the Thing," a list of great movies about theater life.)
"Sexy Jesus needs a pull-my-finger gag."
It's the dog days of summer, and we've got not one but two unscreened/embargoed movies this week: Disaster Movie and College. Written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, Disaster Movie movie spoofs (or, perhaps more accurately, references) such disaster-themed thrillers as Juno, Enchanted, and Sex and the City. College (which shares only a title with the Buster Keaton classic) stars Drake Bell as a guy who attends a wild frat party during his freshman orientation; wacky misadventures with booze and babes ensue. Hey kids, it's time to guess those Tomatometers! (And be sure to check out this week's Total Recall, in which we run through the history of the spoof movie.)
"They tried to make us shoot a funny movie, but we said no, no, no."
Also opening this week in limited release:
Day of Wrath, Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1943 masterwork about witch trials in 16th century Denmark, is at 100 percent.
Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django, a visceral, bizarro mash-up of Spaghetti Western and samurai movie tropes, is at 68 percent (check out RT's exclusive clip here).
Year of the Fish, a rotoscopped Asian-American Cinderella story set in contemporary New York, is at 53 percent.
Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!, about the wacky misadventures of four friends at spring break, is at 21 percent.
"Tarantino's in this movie with a crappy accent? La la la..."

on Aug 28 2008 05:20 PM Disaster Movie: 0%, hopefully EW's Owen Gleiberman won't be a dumbass this time around. College: 0%, thought the trailer was okay, but not being screened makes me wonder, remember Strange Wilderness another non-screened. Babylon doesnt look all that good, I never was a fan of Vin Diesel. Guess this is the week to catch up on movies or see something again. Already saw Hamlet 2, very funny. Guess I'll see The Dark Knight again to end off summer. (Reply to this) |
on Aug 28 2008 05:21 PM Worst week ever? (Reply to this) |
on Aug 28 2008 05:23 PM Wait is Day of Wrath getting a release or something? (Reply to this) |
on Aug 28 2008 05:43 PM "Put this up your nose and get your heiny to Mars." LOL, So I guess there is no 3 titty alien in BABYLON AD?!? BABYLON AD is a definate rental, I will wait for the Director's Cut. Also has anyone scene Death Race, I am thinking about seeing it tomorrow. I will probably rent Traitor, if it got stronger reviews I definately would have been seeing it tomorrow because Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle are awesome. I will try to find that Western, you just gotta love Spagetti Westerns. (Reply to this) |

on Aug 28 2008 05:58 PM Definitely seeing Hamlet 2. I am kind of surprised Babylon is getting such horrific reviews, as it looked *decent* from the trailer. Oh well, after I heard it was cut down to 90 minutes I lost interest anyway. Traitor I may see sometime if I'm really bored, but even from the previews it looks like just another run-of-the-mill political thriller. Disaster Movie...don't even get me started. If there is any justice in the world it will get 0%. College I'm thinking 9%. Didn't look funny at all. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 06:02 PM Been wanting to see Hamlet 2 ever since I first saw the trailer in June. College - 10%, thought the trailer was pretty stupid Disaster Movie - 1%, just cause there will be one or two idiots that like it (Reply to this) |

on Aug 28 2008 06:24 PM can you tell it's the end of the summer when all these movies are getting dumped into theaters? yeah, i think i'll be seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX again this weekend. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 06:27 PM Traitor is the only new film that would deserve my money had I been interested in it. Disastor movie, A.D. and college can spend there self life in the 5 dollar bin for all I care. And I have no sympathy for Kassovitz, studio our not you can still churn out a good product and his cut is probly worthy of a 26% at best. (Reply to this) |
on Aug 28 2008 06:52 PM Saw Traitor today and it was great. It's not a pro-terrorist movie nor is it anything like the Bourne movies like most people were thinking it would be. Don Cheadle just proves that he is one of the best actors working in Hollywood. Guy Pearce is also good too. Might see Hamlet 2 this weekend cause it looks good. Disaster Movie and Babylon A.D. are both no's. Might see College on DVD. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 06:56 PM man this is a bad week for movies Disaster Movie = 0 to 5 percent i would say why do they still make these movies College = porobly 14 percent (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 07:02 PM College = 23% Disaster Movie = 8% Don't call me Nostradamus just yet.... (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 07:14 PM Gimme 5% on disaster movie and 8% on college. Both sound awful. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 08:33 PM i say about 3% on disaster movie. if this gets #1 at the box office, I throw in the towel on humanity. i'd rather rub one off to an episode of the golden girls than watch this crap. traitor doesnt look too bad, i'll probably see it babylon sounded interesting until the post production problems, it's a shame. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 09:13 PM I'm surprised "Babylon" is getting smashed like it is. "Disaster Movie": -99.99999999. I can dream. I hope this tanks horrifically. I've seen Seltzerturd's previous movies and there were four laughs combined; and all of them were in "Meet The Spartans"! (Awful, but not as soul deadingly as "Epic Movie" or "Date Movie") Although, I have to admit that turning the chipmunks into demonic beings is worthy have a half-assed chuckle. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 09:36 PM You silly people, why do you care so much about the trailers? I have never understood this. I think I see most of the good moviews, but I never watch a trailer if I can help it. It's possible to learn about a movie without seeing the best scenes in advance. (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 09:51 PM Disaster Movie 4% College 14% (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 28 2008 10:01 PM College 4% Disaster Movie 2% (Reply to this) |
|
on Aug 29 2008 12:09 AM Disaster movie 3% (Reply to this) |

on Aug 29 2008 12:10 AM Wow. This is a HORRIBLE weekend. Disaster movie gets a 2% because most people are sick of Freidberg and Seltzers lame ****, but some flaming, **** gobbling, dickheaded son-of-a-***** thunder **** like Jurgen Fauth will give it a good review just to show how ****ing "edgy" they are. Just down a big glass of drano with a cold bleach chaser already, you ****. College looks God-awful in a way that will get me sent to hell just for using His name in the same sentence. 11%. Babylon got a 0%. I can't say I'm surprised considering what a complete ****-job Fox does with everything it touches. By the way, Vin Diesel is a horrible actor and can't carry a movie as the lead. I'm disappointed with Traitor, but not surprised. I imagine the upcoming Body of Lies will get a similar score. It's ok for a movie to be complicated (Syriana), but it has to lead somewhere. Hamlet 2 looks ****ty. Sorry. Movies about freedom of speech that are offensive just to prove a point are not funny. (Reply to this) |
on Aug 29 2008 12:19 AM Hamlet 2 looks worth watching, but if I wait until cable I won't be too upset. Summer is over, time for the fall melodramas. (Reply to this) |
