Clark Mathis, this haunting exploration of grief and the painfully attenuated time allowed for it in American culture makes rural Vermont its stunning backdrop. Vinessa Shaw (FATHERS AND SONS) stars as Molly, a young woman from an upper-class family who has just lost her husband in a car accident. An amateur photographer, she wanders the back roads trying to capture the image of the dead man, which haunts her. Meanwhile, her disconnected mother (Marsha Mason, BRIDE AND PREJUDICE) tries to get Molly to find a new man, while her alcoholic father (Edward Herrmann, THE AVIATOR) tries to placate her, and her sister (Ari Graynor, IMAGINARY HEROES) offers nothing but sullen alienation. Molly turns to Dennis (Tim Blake Nelson, WONDERLAND) for an odd kind of companionship; Dennis has the mentality of a child and lives in a trailer park with his irresponsible Uncle Happy (played by director Tim Daly) as his guardian of sorts. The three forge an unlikely alliance, eventually expressing their pain in an act of surprising violence. Shaw turns in a remarkable performance in her first starring role, a film whose success, while not unmitigated, is truly affecting. [More]

Reviews for Bereft
Its conclusion is unsatisfying and probably undeserving for at least one of the characters leaving us wondering why we were grieving at all and was it worth it?
