Consensus: Featuring an attractive young cast, Charlotte mostly shines as a portrait of the sexual frolics and hangups of L.A. Asian twentysomethings.

The woman in this case Michael's neighbor and tenant-- a girlishly sexy princess by the name of Lori. Lori feels coveted and yet chaste in the glow of Michael's calm, silent gaze -- an addictive combination she can scarcely live without. Physically, however, she prefers the touch of another man. Justin is a handsome, half-Asian stock broker whose passion for life is trampled by the dizzying demands of his fast-track career. After work, Justin crashes at Lori's apartment hoping to steal a few extra moments of peace. But Lori's enticing bids to claim those moments for herself spur in Justin a flood of sexual intensity often bordering on cruelty. Afterwards, Justin pretends to sleep, sending lovesick Lori upstairs to Michael for late night movies cuddled up on his couch. Into the fray wanders Darcy-- a novelist and world traveler who singles Michael out at the local nightspot. Michael senses the danger in Darcy's eyes, but he invites her into his life, and soon into the lives of Lori and Justin. Slowly, the seduction begins. By the time Darcy sets off into the world again, her insinuating power has sparked a chain reaction of passion and betrayal, where all the truths and all the lies, so carefully kept hidden, are ultimately revealed. -- © Visionbox [More]

Dry but occasionally interesting independent feature.

This and other movies like it seem to say love is complicated and can cause much misery, but that never strikes me as insightful.

Fittingly probing, sensual, mysterious and raw. Byler’s exposition is vastly taut, revealing, and firmly perceptive. Charlotte Sometimes radiates with invigorating absorption

Though the themes aren't exactly groundbreaking, they're executed skillfully enough to make the movie well worth seeing - for fans of the genre, at any rate.

The film's nervous reticence makes it both precious and a little unwieldy, like a matchstick palace built on a subway platform.

As an antidote to talky American indies involving twentysomething romantic conundrums, Charlotte Sometimes hits just the right note.

Charlotte Sometimes nails the subtle psychotic element that circles budding relationships.

The foursome of actors, especially actresses Yuan and Kim, fill their portrayals with a smoldering, sometimes desperate, yearning.

An erotic mystery of sorts, the film works because it's laconic rather than talky and its actors are all up for the material.

It features plenty of hushed moments that suggest the presence of nuances that never really emerge from its murky tone.

A smartly made, hedonistic spectacle of alluring, nubile characters, sun-warmed narcissism and breathtaking color.

A romantic but nevertheless clear-eyed look at the things we do for love.

It's a hushed work of restrained emotions, elliptical storytelling and spare dialogue, peopled with smart, authentic characters who have drawn you into their lives before you know it.

Whether or not it's a pose, the film's poised reticence is refreshing in context -- a rebuke to the contemporary crop of blabbermouthed American indies.
