This politically charged 1981 drama isn't one of Schlöndorff's greatest films, but its strong moral concerns and superb cast make it well worth viewing.

As his marriage quickly degrades, Georg decides to escape to war-torn Beirut, where he hopes to document the country's civil war in an essay for his newspaper. Along with his photographer friend Hoffman (Jerzy Skolimowski), he finds himself immersed in the immediacy of the violence -- dodging bullets and conducting interviews with dangerous subjects. He also finds another kind of danger, an affair with a beautiful widow (Hanna Schygulla). [More]

Reviews for Circle of Deceit
The humanist Circle of Deceit charts the many moral quandaries encountered by a journalist when he’s sent to Beirut to catalog the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war.
Aspires to the humanist as well as the humanitarian, and ultimately achieves both.
