Consensus: A shocking and disturbing, but always compelling look at life in the slums of Rio de Janiero.

Runtime: 2 hrs 10 mins

Genre: Foreign Films

US Box Office: $7,299,820

Synopsis: Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera. Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. Technically flawless, the Brazilian film uses a rapid-cutting style to flash back and forth in time. Cinematographer Cesar Charlone shoots with an overexposed glow in a film that may seem numb to violence, but reveres photography. Director Meirelles was assisted by Katia Lund, a filmmaker who had previously shot in the Rio ghettos. [More]

Although the subject matter will be abhorrent and repellent to some viewers, those who can accept or at least tolerate it will be in store for a tremendous piece of filmmaking featuring a mesmerizing story and an unforgettable array of characters.

Very lively and incredibly violent ... and just as incredibly restrained in the way it keeps its gangster saga honest.

The cast of unknown actors, many from the real ghetto, provides the movie with unexpected heart and humor.

There's something distasteful in the rote way this film introduces us to two dozen hapless, heartless kids and doesn't care enough to make us feel for them.

The film is far from a work of art, but it marks the emergence of a great new action superchef.

It's like a 24/7 paintball game only they use real guns and real bullets and you get no timeouts. Disturbing, fascinating, heartbreaking, and very realistic.

A textbook example of how to tackle a tough subject and not make a pretentious movie.

The violence never feels exploitative; the only thrill you feel is that of being in the hands of a masterful storyteller opening your eyes to a world that you feel truly exists.

A well-made but pointless picture, it is a non-stop orgy of senseless violence, as teens and preteens slaughter each other like animals.

Directed in a sort of urban panoramic style, City of God is, much more than Gangs of New York, a telling and intelligent snapshot of clashing turf warfare and how it constrictively shapes and molds the urban underbelly of a city.

Heartbreaking and savage without being affectedly artsy or lingering. It employs sound and visuals that have a knack for conveying senses of humour, rhythms of days and the auras and values of people.
