CRIME OF THE CENTURY, a dramatization of the trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann (Stephen Rea), who was charged with the kidnapping, asserts that Hauptmann (sentenced to death for the crime) was, in fact, innocent. Based on Ludovic Kennedy's book THE AIRMAN AND THE CARPENTER, the film showcases deeply moving portrayals of Hauptmann and his wife (Isabella Rossellini) and fascinating, if sometimes cynically brutal, depictions of the men who hunt down Hauptmann, including Colonel Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. (J.T. Walsh). Director Mark Rydell fashions a riveting drama from Kennedy's book that is enhanced by stellar acting performances and an eerie but moving score. [More]
