A dignified send-off for a loved one erupts into uproarious chaos when romance, jealousy, in-laws, hallucinogens, dark secrets, life-long yearnings and a spot of bold blackmail all collide in the irreverent British comedy DEATH AT A FUNERAL. Directed by Frank Oz (Bowfinger, In & Out) and featuring a cast made up of the cream of Britain's crop, the film mischievously explores what happens on the day when a typically divided family is finally forced to come to terms with each other's - bad behavior, outrageous faults, skeletons in the closet and all. On the morning of their father's funeral, the family and friends of the deceased each arrive with his or her own roiling anxieties. Son Daniel (MATTHEW MACFADYEN) knows he will have to face his flirty, blow-hard, famous-novelist brother Robert (RUPERT GRAVES) who's just flown in from New York, not to mention the promises of a new life he's made to his wife Jane (KEELY HAWES). Meanwhile, Daniel's cousin Martha (DAISY DONOVAN) and her dependable new fiance Simon (ALAN TUDYK) are desperate to make a good impression on Martha's uptight father - a plan that literally goes out the window when Simon accidentally ingests a designer drug en route to the service, leaving him prone to uncontrollable bouts of delirium and nudity in front of his potential in-laws. Then comes the real shocker: a mysterious guest (PETER DINKLAGE) who threatens to unveil an earth-shattering family secret. As riotous mayhem and unfortunate mishaps ensue on every front, it is now up to the two brothers to hide the truth from their family and friends and figure out how to not only bury their dearly beloved, but the secret he's been keeping. The film stars Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Elf), Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting, Match Point), Rupert Graves (V for Vendetta). DEATH AT A FUNERAL is directed by Frank Oz and written by Dean Craig. The producers are Sidney Kimmel, Lawrence Malkin, Diana Phillips and Share Stallings. The executive producers are Philip Elway, Andreas Grosch, William Horberg and Bruce Toll. Josh Kesselman, Alex Lewis and Bruce Webb are co-producers. [More]

No, there aren't a lot of surprise giggles in it. But at this Funeral, the pleasure is in seeing those giggles coming.

Writer Dean Craig creates a beautifully intricate farce, and it's how the interlocking pieces snap together that provide much of the mirth, rather than the sometimes stale gags along the way.

The comedy doesn't have much to say, but its humor is killer.

The movie is not always laugh-out-loud funny, but at least it never becomes tiresome or aggravating -- and that's more than a lot of comedies can say.

Death at a Funeral has almost no delightful machinations, no consistency of tone, no relatable characters, and worst of all, no funny jokes.

A well-stitched comedy that veers a little toward by-the-numbers but manages a few sweet surprises.

...it's like walking into a fancy restaurant and being served a dead rat: tonally inconsistent and sufficient to discolor the entire experience.

If, like me, you ever thought the supply of British comic talent was unlimited, here's surprisingly convincing evidence to the contrary.

This is classic British ensemble comedy in a traditional style, with wonderfully understated performances by everyone %u2013 except the unfortunate guest mistakenly high on acid.

It's sillier but funnier than Knocked Up, the summer's other notable comedy.

This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen... [It's] practically Shakespearean in its exquisite foolishness and comedic intrigue...

I'm all for a good poop joke but just getting pooped on isn't itself funny. Especially when they spend the whole movie setting up the old guy and he needs help with the bathroom. Might as well send a telegraph.
