In her last film, Tallulah Bankhead portrays fanatically religious Mrs. Trefoile, a psychotic woman who, with the help of her gardener (Donald Sutherland), imprisons her dead son's fiancee (Stephanie Powers) in a tiny room in her home so that the girl's soul will be properly cleansed in order to be reunited with her dead husband in heaven. Legendary British studio Hammer produced a script by Richard Matheson, based on the novel by Anne Blaisdell. Considered to be a camp classic in many circles, the film is also regarded as one of Hammer's best moments. [More]

One of the best of Hammer's psychological thrillers, mainly thanks to Richard Matheson's ingenious and terrifying script.

Throw-away Tallulah Bankhead vehicle is a curiosity at best.

The last time Miss Bankhead appeared in a film was in the 1953 Main Street to Broadway. Although she towers above the cast and story, her present effort adds little to her record.

Magnificent scenery chewing from Tallulah in a pretty good thriller with smart direction.

Has tremendous tension, especially for a film that sticks close to its formal kidnapping plot.
