Five Favourite Films with James Marsters
by Orlando Parfitt | April 07, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

James Marsters is perhaps best known to audiences as the blonde-haired Sid Vicious-alike Spike on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The vampire who earned his nickname by impaling his victims on railway spikes, he went from Big Bad to Buffy's boyfriend when a shadowy government cell called The Initiative fitted a chip in his brain that prevented him from doing harm. He stars this week in Dragonball: Evolution, based on the Japanese Manga comic, as Lord Piccolo, the megalomaniacal villain out to destroy the world by uniting the seven Dragonballs. Great list!

Ratatouille, I think, is one of the best animations ever made by a great director. As a food lover, I loved this treat.

I liked his explanations for the most part. I do believe Ratatouille is a great movie, moreso than WallE for me because it was less preachy and less filled with hackneyed and cliched social critique, so that's not a bad choice.

It was no secret that he was the best thing about those Buffy/Angel shows. It's weird we don't see more of him, with all the other Whedon actors popping up all over the place and often getting their own shows (for better or worse).

And this is what was wrong with Ratatouille: Sewer rats cooking food for humans. I can watch Re-animator and laugh, but that was oddly hard to stomach. Probably because it was presented in a cute, Disneyfied way. Still a good flick, but the Toy Story movies blow it away, even without that.

James Marsters sounds seems to have good taste in films, why did he sign on to do Dragonball, and then follow that with talk that he wants to make seven more sequels.

Spike rules and Marsters is a great actor. Like his list, and especially his heartfelt explanations on why he chose those films.

For people asking why he could be in Dragonball and talk of its greatness, the answer is easy. He got offered a lead role in a big movie, so he took it. He needs to promote that movie and help it be successful so that it can lead to other roles, so he talks it up. Pretty standard practice.

Marsters has popped up on quite a few other TV shows. Most notably probably a run as Brainiac on Smallville, a bit strange the first time you hear him without a British accent. Personally I didn't care for Ratatoille. I saw it several months after it initially came out and had been told it was fantastic, but at that point the wonder at the technical aspects of Pixar had worn off for me and I just didn't find the plot that engrossing though the ending was solid. The main weak part for me was I can't honestly say I really liked any of the characters. The critic was supposed to be unlikeable, but was probably the best character. The guy was just annoying. If I heard him say "Little Chef" one more time I'd probably have had to attacked the screen. His love interest was a stuck up beech and the rats weren't greatly charming like so many other Pixar characters. Other than that good list.

What do you mean "what can we expect from a Buffy fan"? Blade Runner is a favorite of mine and I'm a huge Buffy fan [I do a re-watch of the series every year or so]. That was great television and I think you'd find most Buffy fans have excellent taste in entertainment.

Well, I suppose Anto Ego really made the film, beside the stellar animation smart writing and well cast voice acting. But Peter O'Toole as Anton Ego is like a send up to all critics. In a friendly homage style way. Great film.

Thanks, I don't necessarily agree with your reasoning besides acknowledging the obvious fact that Peter O'Toole is an acting God, but I respect that you have a reasoning for liking the movie. I suppose I'd just heard "Ratatoille is fantastic...end stop" so many times I'd begun to wonder if people were just blindly worshipping at the Pixar idol.

Don't mistake me for a Pixar hater, I really enjoyed Monsters Inc, Toy Story, Cars etc but I guess since I personally wouldn't put any of them in my personal top movies categories it's hard for me to get what people are talking about with the Pixar-worship.

Ratatouille was very good, I do agree. Dragonball is just going to suck. Its special effects are almost the equivalent of that of Speed Racer. They even made Goku look a little bit like that sparkly vampire dude from Twilight. ¬¬;

i felt that the love story in ratatouille was rushed through and i didn't believe that they really belonged together or had any chemistry. that part felt like the writers were bowing to convention and it really hurt the movie for me. i also could not suspend my disbelief enough to accept that the rat could control the boy by pulling on his hair (though i was willing to accept a rat with the voice of patton oswalt). i enjoyed ratatouille (and i loved o'toole as ego and oswalt as the rat) but i really don't think it was as good as people proclaim.
