Griffith comprise this film collection: THE BATTLE OF ELDERBRUSH GULCH (1914) follows a party of Indians who get drunk and then set out to hunt and eat the dogs of the pioneers. When an irate settler kills one of the dog-hunters, he touches off a full-scale Indian war. Lionel Barrymore and Mae Marsh co-star. The second film is IOLA'S PROMISE (1912), or HOW THE LITTLE INDIAN MAID PAID HER DEBT OF GRATITUDE, in which a young Indian girl (Mary Pickford) is rescued from a band of savages by a good-hearted prospector (Alfred Paget), and later sacrifices herself to save him. THE GODDESS OF SAGEBRUSH GULCH (1912) stars Blanche Sweet as the "goddess" who, among other feats, rescues her less-resilient sister (Dorothy Bernard) from a spectacularly blazing log house fire. Griffith made all three for Biograph in the early days of cinema, and they remain hugely entertaining examples of effective storytelling and filmmaking innovation. [More]
