Box Office Guru Wrapup: Eagle Eye Flies to #1
Kirk Cameron makes long-anticipated return to box office success.

Discuss Article
Looking down upon the rest of the box office, Eagle Eye soared to the top of the charts this weekend with one of the largest September openings in history. But the real surprise on the charts was in the number four position. Overall, the top ten sailed above last year's levels.

The combination of actor Shia LaBeouf, director D.J. Caruso and executive producer Steven Spielberg ruled the charts as the action-thriller Eagle Eye landed at number one this weekend with an estimated $29.2M for a per screen average of $8,319. The opening currently stands as the fourth biggest opening in September history behind only Sweet Home Alabama ($35.6M in 2002), Rush Hour ($33M in 1998) and The Exorcism of Emily Rose ($30M in 2005). It was also the biggest opening weekend in nearly two months since the The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor's $40.4M back during the first weekend in August. The last time LaBeouf and Caruso teamed up was on the surprise hit Disturbia which opened in April of last year to $22.2M on its way to a robust $80.2M finale. Reviews were not strong but audiences lined up for the biggest 'event' film in weeks.

In second place was the romantic drama Nights in Rodanthe based on the acclaimed novel from Nicholas Sparks. The Warner Bros. film grossed $13.6M this weekend, according to estimates, for a decent average of $5,018 per screen. The total fell just behind the opening of the last pairing between Richard Gere and Diane Lane, 2002's Unfaithful which opened to $14.1M. Reviews have not been kind to Rodanthe, but expect many couples to curl up on the couch with this film when it hits DVD during the winter.

Falling two spots to number three was the Samuel L. Jackson thriller Lakeview Terrace with an estimated $7M falling a steep 53% bringing its cume after two weeks to $25.7M. Look for the Sony release to end with a final gross in the $40M range.

Coming from seemingly out of nowhere and debuting in fourth place was the Kirk Cameron drama Fireproof. The film, which tells the story of a firefighter who must find a way to save his marriage, brought in an estimated $6.5M from only 839 screens for a strong average of $7,764, second highest in the top ten. The film has been heavily promoted to Christian groups and proves once again that religious-themed films can bring in an audience.

Fifth place belonged to the Coen brothers latest dark comedy, Burn After Reading. Starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, the film brought in an estimated $6.2M this weekend bringing its cume to $45.5M. The film is now the second highest grossing title for the Coen's behind only last years Academy Award winning No Country for Old Men which made $74.3M.

In sixth place with the best hold in the top ten was the animated comedy Igor which slipped only 29.5% to $5.5M, bringing its cume to $14.3M. Look for a final gross in the $25-30M range and a steeper drop next weekend as the family comedy Beverly Hills Chihuahua storms theaters.

The race for seventh place was a tight one as Righteous Kill and My Best Friend's Girl are reporting grosses within $3,000 of each other. Currently in seventh is the DeNiro/Pacino combination of Righteous Kill which took in an estimated $3.803M this weekend, bringing its cume to $34.8M. In eighth is the romantic comedy My Best Friend's Girl which laughed up an estimated $3.8M this weekend bringing its cume to $14.5M.

Debuting in ninth place with dismal results was the Spike Lee war drama Miracle at St. Anna which brought in an estimated $3.5M from 1,185 for a sad per screen average of 2,954M. And closing out the top ten was Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys which had the largest drop in the top 10, falling 56.5% to $3.1M bringing its cume to $32.8M.

The top ten films grossed $82.2M which was up 15% from last year when The Game Plan opened in the top spot with $23M; and down 2% from 2006 when the animated Open Season debuted at number one with $23.6M.

eagle eye should have at least pulled a solid 35 million.
Nights in rondanthe eked a 13.5 million which is ok,but should have made at least 16 to 17 million.
Lakeview terrace falling 53% was expected and i think will gross at least 41-42 million.

A moment of silence for the Dark Knight- no longer in the top

ten this week for the first time for 11 weeks! It was a great ride and I had

wish RT would have at least mentioned this important event. I just hope TDk

makes it to a billion w.w. box office.

Also, good factoid by mr. Sujit Chawla on the "Burn After

Reading" box office total being the second highest Cohen grossing movie. I'm

glad it won't surpass No Country for Old Man's total because it was by far

a superior picture. Nothing against their latest flick but its not a near

masterpiece, folks.

On Eagle Eye, I can't say I'm surprised the film failed miketait's personal

box office hopes. The film was okay but nothing special but i must congrat

Shia for posting a number one box office showing.

Finally, befoer i take my leave... How About Kirk Cameron pulling out the

stunner of the weekend?!? His beliefs might upset some but in my eyes he'll

always be Mikey Seaver and I'm happy for his success. I bet back in the 80's

many expected Kirk to have a nice movie career like his fellow family sitcom

peer, Michael J. Fox, but he took another path and even though we might

disagree... at least he seems happy and fufilled. Still, I'm shocked from

the box office of 6.5 million from 839 screens for a freakin 7,764 average

is unbelievable! Its also nice to see some Christain brothers and sisters

packing in to see a film not based on extreme violence and conterversy. Hmm,

do I see a Cameron & Gibson buddy picture coming soon ;)

I am surprised at the successful opening of FIREPROOF. I have no problem with evangelical movies, if done well. But I think Cameron might be nuts, and the film looks like a Lifetime movie reject. It didn't gain any new converts. It's huge opening obviously shows how well it preaches to the choir.

I should mention that I hate Tyler Perry movies for their heavy-handed, non-subtle dialogue as well. The previews of FIREPROOF remind me of a Tyler Perry production. Cliche' filled movies play to an undemanding audience. "Just tell us we're right!"

I knew Eagle Eye would be number one, but I'm not sure if it will break the 100 million mark. Miracle at St. Anna totally bombed which is a shame because I like Spike Lee's films. However St. Anna pulled in some bad reviews and that alienated the moviegoers that tend to read reviews. Fireproof really surprised me this weekend. I mean it already recouped its budget of $500,000 in one weekend (actually it recouped it in one day). It will be interesting to see how it holds up this upcoming weekend with six new movies opening up. Way to go Kirk Cameron!

Movies like fireproof just arent for me. Yeah there geared toward christians but they play and look like direct-to-dvd movies, much like the tyler perry movies. But hey if theres an audience for these types of films, more power to them.

When will hollywood understand, christians are a big market, not as big as teens, and young adults. but look at passion of the christ(great movie by the way), allot of tyler perry's movies(mostly black, but still christian),and plenty of others. Fireproof had a little push (which suprised me that it had any at all) and looked terrible but yet still made a really good average. There are not that many movies that are geared for christians, so hollywood make some good ones please, so i dont have to feel guilty about going to the movies haha

I wish more people would have seen Miracle at St. Anna. It was an epic amazing masterpiece. Hopefully more will show up, so what if it got bad reviews, in my mind this is one critics got deadly wrong. It will be a classic. Eagle Eye was expected. 5 days for Blindness.

Burn After Reading was my movie, again, this weekend, since Choke didn't open near me at all. I'm hoping some of the movies from next week's openings will show around me, at least Religulous, maybe Rocknrolla. Doubt that last one though.

Eagle Eye was no Disturbia but it was still a solid movie, even if it was a little ridiculous at times. I wanna see St. Anna but if the reviews and boxoffice are any indication its that I shouldn't see it. But I like Spike Lee and his movies are usually good so I'll probably see it.

October looks to have some good movies coming out. RockNRolla, Zak & Miri Make a Porno, Max Payne, and Infinite Playlist should all be good.

YUK MAX PAYNE?!? Really? No Body of Lives, Changeling, Religulous? I agree with the other choices, maybe not Nick and Noarah, but Max Payne looks like a total CGI fest.

Glad September is over. I haven't been a fan of any movies this month. October is going to be packed:

-Nick & Norah (looks very funny)
-Zack and Miri Make a Porno (no reason....)
-Max Payne (in the mood for some mindless violence)
-Changeling (Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jole = perfection)
-Saw V (Don't like the sequels, but must support Julie Benz)

Might go see Blindness too if I have the money.

Changeling looked cool just for Jeffrey Donavon. Unfortunately it looked like it could have easily made PG-13 but they decided to throw in needless aspects to make it R.

Miracle at St. Anna was overblown and lame as hell. I'm surprised it debuted so poorly, but I can't say it didn't deserve it. Really looking forward to Apaloosa though!

I remember when Kirk Cameron fronted the Left Behind adaptations, which went straight-to-video. Their release pattern was to feed it through rentals first, then build word-of-mouth and spread a campaign through phone calls and fliers to get a theatrical release. This message was brought to you by Kirk Cameron at the end of the movie's tape. I will let you decide how ridiculous that idea is, but then again this was back when movies were still coming out on videotape.

Tyler Perry is more of an anomaly, in that his fanbase already knew damn well who he was and what values his stories conferred through his plays, which he staged on national tours relentlessly, honing jokes and removing weak parts a la The Marx Bros. His success speaks more to his singular work ethic than the mobilizing of an entire sect of the country through advertising, per se.

It wasn't until Passion of the Christ motivated megachurches to buy tickets en masse that any kind of impact was felt. Of course, all the controversy and Gibson's pedigree didn't hurt, but now church-backed release strategies make a little more sense (e.g., get the word out BEFORE the movie comes out). Those Hollyweird Lie-beral baby-killing moonbats make millions at the B.O. for a reason, Christian America. But honest congrats on learning how to play the game, you deserve to have your stories told just as much as those Kurtzman/Orci hacks.

Pretty cool that a Christian film that should have been direct to video, do so well. Wish they would make a good christian movie. There is so much stuff out there, and if done right could be great (ie This Present Darkness, The Oath, any of the old testament stories or the beginning of the church would all adapt to film well and some have in the past). Also cool to see Shia is becoming such a box office draw, he in my opinion, is an under rated actor, that has a way of connecting and conveying the normal average american guy.

kirk cameron is insane and all those who think like him should be in a mental institution. seriously, its "normal" to believe hilarious bs like god and stuff, but if say...i told everybody i worship my trojan magnum condom, prayed to it everyday...thanked it for giving me such good times, i'd be considered crazy. yet its entirely ok for people to believe in insane ideas that aren't remotely close to the vicinity of a ballpark of truth nor reality. hmm...humanity confuses me sometimes. that disgusting vid of him praising a banana scares the h3ll out of me. i mean f3ck, he's allowed to vote in this country?

eagle eye was pretty good, predictable and ripped off quite a few movies before it(most notabley "the man who knew too much") but like most Shia movies...it was executed very very well. might be a d3ck in real life but his flix always seem to entertain me.
