Too portentous, overheated, flashy, derivative and implausible for its own good.

During the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, three friends witness the horrific murder of a classmate. Many years later, the three find themselves reunited, although under less than happy circumstances. Tur and Ramallo have been quarantined for tuberculosis, and their old friend Francisca is a nun working in the asylum. They all remain haunted by what occurred during the war, as all of Spain was, and struggle to reconcile with their pasts, their religion, and the growing homosexual attraction between Tur and Ramallo. EL MAR has won international acclaim for its acting and unforgettable visuals. After being nominated for two Goya Awards (the Spanish equivalent of the Oscar), EL MAR went on to win the Manfred Salzgeber Award for innovation and a nomination for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival as well as being featured at the San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.
