He didn't lose his job because his unpaid editorial tenure was coming to an end anyway but if it wasn't he would have lost it, not for the content of the article he published, but because he published it without submitting it for peer review, that was the big problem there.

And his being 'demoted' was not that at all, he was moved because the whole depaartment he was working in was being restructured and everyone was moved around, not just him.

Basically he just lied about the whole situation, but that fits in just about right with this movie which is nothing more than a shameless piece of religious propaganda.
