Consensus: Kubrick's intense study of the human psyche yields an impressive cinematic work.

Tom Cruise stars as Bill Harford, a doctor who becomes obsessed with a sexual fantasy that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), confesses to him. Although the fantasy (involving a naval officer) occurred only in Alice's mind, Bill can't get it out of his own head; his obsession leads him through a series of potential sexual encounters, each one surrounded by the specter of death. His whole world threatens to unravel as he falls deeper and deeper into a web of mystery, lies, and deceit. Kubrick's film breathes with vivid blues, reds, and blacks, the threat of illicit sex and death lurking around every corner. Cruise and Kidman, who are married in real life, are utterly convincing as a happy couple suddenly forced to reexamine their faith in each other. Sidney Pollack, Todd Field, Julienne Davis, Marie Richardson, and Vinessa Shaw sparkle in minor roles. Based on the novella TRAUMNOVELLE by Arthur Schnitzler, EYES WIDE SHUT is a brilliant examination of the psychological nature of sex and marriage, of faith and faithlessness, of obsession and desire. Kubrick said that his last film (he died shortly before the film opened) was "my best film ever;" while that is debatable, there is no doubting that the film is a splendid finale to a glorious career. Reviews for Eyes Wide Shut
The #1 Movie of 1999: 'A coherent summary of Kubrick's longtime themes and a worthy capstone to his long, distinguished career.'
What ends up on screen is sumptuous, portentous, slow-moving and pointless.
There's no doubt that the late Stanley Kubrick was one of the most brilliant filmmakers of the century. Even when you're put off by how cold and deliberate his films can be, you still can't help but be amazed by the artistry.
when its moments of truth arrive they're as bracing as if you'd stepped out of a steaming shower straight into a winter storm. The shocks go straight to the heart.
The interest in "Eyes Wide Shut," then, should be less in its supposed subject matter than in Kubrick's masterful filmmaking.
Qualquer filme capaz de despertar tantas indagações já vale uma conferida.
[Kubrick's] final, hypnotic, meticulously crafted film... hangs on something as commonplace as a husband's confession of his strange desires.
It's one of the few true masterpieces of the 90's, even if it took me a third viewing to realize just how phenomenal it was.
Eyes Wide Shut...is a fitting coda to a career that engaged and puzzled always and simultaneously.
It's fitting that Kubrick go out in style, with an uneasy film like Eyes Wide Shut, one that had critics divided and audiences baffled.
an utterly absorbing nightmare of a film, a precise director's evocation of a waking dream, punctuated with uncharacteristic humanity and a surprisingly optimistic ending.
s this Kubrick's best work? I don't think so, but it is certainly in keeping with his tradition of creating enigmatic films with emotionally isolated characters.
