It's a powerful movie without always, or often, being a very good one; watching it is a bit like being inside the twistings and conniptions of a control freak who longs to lose control, only to pull back tighter than ever.
Brilliantly illuminates his strengths as a filmmaker while also spotlighting his shortcomings.
Censored or not, Eyes Wide Shut remains an absorbing, haunting and ultimately profoundly moral work by a filmmaker working at the peak of his craft.
Stanley Kubrick's infamously obsessive-compulsive direction pays off with Cruise and Kidman, inspiring fully-fleshed and manifold performances from his stars.
Even more than the postwar European cineastes who'd slyly titillate ticket buyers in trade for the privilege of being almost inscrutably profound, the hermitic Kubrick lived to make intellectual sport of audience expectations.
Kubrick fans would do wisely to sit back, take a deep breath, and just appreciate Eyes Wide Shut for what the film is -- a departed master's final gift. We will never see the likes of it again.
Quite good in parts and always dazzling to the eye but a letdown all the same.
For adult audiences, it creates a mesmerizing daydream of sexual fantasy.

Kubrick would not have wanted any one truth to emerge
The best filmmakers provide the best questions, not the easiest answers.
A beautifully filmed, thought-provoking, disturbing and occasionally erotic dissection of jealousy and infidelity.
It's Kubrick telling a tediously elaborate joke at a party, using his eccentric genius and charisma to keep you captivated against all odds.
It's a hollowness not of technique but of conception.
Perverted, pretentious, numbing.
Profound, intimate, provocative, richly ambiguous and spiked with sudden or sustained bursts of deeply knowing humor.
The ambiguities recede and everything is precisely what it looks like.
Its scenes have both an edge and an extraordinary visual perfection that could come from no other filmmaker.
