Seizing American business interests led to a United States embargo. The animosity between America and Cuba would result in two major incidents, the Bay of Pigs invasion and a stand-off involving Russian missile bases in Cuba. Under Castro, the middle and upper classes suffered (as did Castro's political enemies), but the poor faired very well with improved education and health care.
